Housing
Why 250k?
Context:
Housing experts and state and local governments all agree: we need to dramatically increase our housing supply to get people off the streets, make housing more affordable for everyone, and to be prepared for a future of population growth in Los Angeles. The solution itself is simple. Getting there won’t be.
Specifically the 250k number comes from California State Governor Gavin Newsom (who mandated it to LA City Council and says state housing funds will depend on it)
How do we get there?
- Re-zone for to allow for more building.
- Speed up the city’s approval /permitting process
- Build faster and more cost-efficiently
Is the City on board?
Yes. Mayor Karen Bass and the Los Angeles City Council are working towards achieving that goal.
What are outside experts saying?
All policy experts and advocacy organizations are pointed in the same direction: approve and build a lot more units, a lot faster than we have historically. Most have loftier goals than the city does. But all agree on where we need to head.
California Housing Project: says LA needs to build 270k additional affordable units to address our current housing shortage. Slightly higher goal but same idea.
Abundant LA Housing: says LA has a 700k unit affordable housing deficit. Much higher number that the 250k commitment.
No Going Back LA: LA needs to build 100k units per year (60k market rate units, 40k affordable units). Much higher number than the 250k commitment.
