Climate Resilience
Why Renewable Electricity?
Context:
Increasing Renewable Energy Supply = Less Reliance on Fossil Fuels = Cleaner Air in LA
The first step to fully decarbonizing our city is to get our electrical grid running on 100% renewables. Starting there helps us run everything else (transportation, buildings, etc.) on renewable energy.
We need to go from roughly 40% (January 2025) to 100% in 10 years i.e. an increase of 6% annually.
How do we get there?
- Build more wind, solar, hydro farms.
- Build more power storage infrastructure.
- Build more transmission lines to get the power into Los Angeles.
Is the City on board?
Yes. Making our electrical grid 100% renewable is a part of the Green New Deal – a climate framework laid out for Los Angeles in 2019 during Mayor Eric Garcetti’s administration.
What the policy experts / advocacy groups are saying:
The LA100 Study, which was published in March 2021, was a public and private collaboration that has largely been accepted as the gold standard for Los Angeles and for US cities in general.
Study participants included: National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the US Department of Energy (DOE), Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP,) University of Southern California, and Colorado State University.
